You wouldnβt publish a book without crediting its author. You wouldnβt photograph a model without paying a fee. So why do we take from Nature for free?
We profit from the beauty, resources and symbolism of the natural world. Shouldnβt we pay Nature too? Mirroring Natureβs principle of reciprocity, in return for lending her artistry, we pledge a Nature Licensing Fee; a portion of House of Hackney sales go directly to Nature. Through our partnership with World Land Trust, we help protect and restore the living systems from which our inspiration is drawn.
WORLD LAND TRUSTΒ
House of Hackney has been a partner on World Land Trustβs landmark land purchase fundraising βBuy an Acreβ initiative since 2022. Thanks to our wonderful customers, 513 acres of threatened habitats and their wildlife have come under protection since the start of our partnership.Β
βBuy an Acreβ projects are chosen in areas of maximum biodiversity, where overseas conservation partners can purchase land for an average of Β£100 an acre. World Land Trust is careful about its selection of projects and works closely with local non-governmental organisations to ensure that there can be no question of green colonialism.
Through a donation of 87 pence for every metre of fabric, roll of wallpaper and individual item sold, 35 square metres of threatened habitats can be purchased and protected by World Land Trust and their network of local partners.Β
A WILD IDEA
A WILD IDEA
As a brand rooted in the natural world, a floral pattern on a wall or an animal print fabric is not just decoration, but a reminder of the living world we need to honour and protect. So how do we do that?Β
From the planting of the first seeds of House of Hackney, to the simple, beautiful idea that design and reciprocity can go hand in hand when you see natural world as a collaborator, not a commodity, read, in our founder Friedaβs words, how what started as a βwild ideaβ, turned out to be not so wild afterallβ¦
