Heavenly Hemp

Natural fabric for a new generation

Think hemp can’t be luxe? Think again! In our House, conscious choices don’t mean compromising on style; our new 100% hemp fabric proves natural fibres can be chic.

An ancestral fiber, hemp has been used throughout history, from the earliest paper to the green revolution, and now, as a House of Hackney staple. With a sumptuous, natural aesthetic, our HEAVENLY HEMP collection promises to add a touch of Nature to your home.

Grown with little water and without chemical fertilisers and pesticides, hemp is

considered one of the most efficient plants at converting carbon dioxide into oxygen, which makes it the perfect addition to the House of Hackney family, supporting our mission to contribute to the regeneration of Nature.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF HEMP

Hemp has gotten a lot of press in recent years, with the rise in wellness culture and sustainability, but this ancient fibre has been used for thousands of years, and was one of the first plants to be domesticated by humans, with evidence dating back to 8000 BCE.

In ancient China, Egypt, Greece and Rome, hemp was prized for its versatility, and was cultivated for its fibres to make textiles and paper. With the spread of colonialism in the 16th century, hemp became a major agricultural product, and its popularity rose to new heights with the textile industry boom in the 19th century.

Hemp production declined dramatically in the 20th century, with the introduction of new synthetic fibres and the association with cannabis, which led to its criminalisation in some countries.

Today, the ancient fibre is seeing a revival, driven by its environmental benefits and the rise in conscious consumerism, lauded for its low water usage, ability to grow fast without pesticides, and its connection to health and wellness.

AT HOME WITH HEMP

Hemp has come a long way since the scratchy smocks of the ‘60s, and this natural fibre is the perfect way to bring the refined elegance of Nature into the home.

House of Hackney’s Heavenly Hemp fabric has a slightly textured, rich surface, similar to pure linen, and is woven to bring out the softness and beauty of the fibre, offering a more sophisticated look than the hemps of yesterday.

With an earthy colour-palette of Nature’s neutrals and rich, russet-orange, forest green and soft blush pink, our hemp blends seamlessly with natural materials like wood, stone and glass, adding warmth and depth to any space.

Whether you want to soften a modern home, add texture to a room or create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, hemp will imbue a grounding, natural aesthetic to your interiors. Used as a primary feature or as a complimentary plain to our Nature-inspired prints, the Heavenly Hemp collection is ideal for upholstery, drapes, bedding and accessories. This is fabric as Nature intended.
