our story

In a Victorian townhouse in London,

Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle first dreamed up House of Hackney. Today the husband-and-wife team has grown into a family of artists, designers, producers and collaborators. Powered by a fearless imagination and innovative thinking, we’ve blazed a trail through the magnolia-walled interiors of the 21st century, a riot of color and print. Built upon the foundations of creativity with purpose, integrity in our actions and compassion for people and planet, we continue to build upon the House, creating unique and inspiring designs that will stand the test of time.

On our doorstep is a special place called Hackney; a village-like neighborhood of London with a melting pot of cultures and a colorful community of creatives that never fail to inspire us.

The House we’ve created is a sanctuary from the outside world, adorned with prints and colors inspired by Mother Nature. Following in the footsteps of our design hero, William Morris, our house is not filled with lots of ‘'stuff'’, only things that have a purpose, created for both their beauty and their meaning. We call them ‘'future heirlooms'’; artistically designed pieces made in Britain by craftspeople specializing in generations-old trades.

Our House is your house. Welcome home.

“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

- William Morris

Our Craft

Since the day our House was built, a sense of compassion for people and planet has served as the foundation of everything we do. Here is the story of how it began.
