In ancient Rome, a rose was the symbol of secrecy; one would be suspended above meeting tables to encourage the freedom to speak plainly without repercussion, hence Sub Rosa, ‘under the rose’. And this one is extra special, as it is made from mycelium; a groundbreaking, 100% biodegradable material made from fungi fibres, grown especially for us by Magical Mushroom Company.
To make this Ceiling Rose, Sterile wood chips - recycled from waste products - and hemp are mixed with the mycelium mushroom spores to create a substrate which is applied to the wooden moulds we created with the heritage craftspeople at Wood Carving London. After a few days, the mycelium starts to grow around the moulds binding them together and forming a solid shape. Once it has reached the desired form, it is baked to stop the spores from growing.
And we are left with a finished product, created with completely natural materials; a celebration of fantastic fungi not only in its design, but in the very way it is made.

STEP 1: Measure the room
Before placing your order, be sure to map out the space where you would like the furniture to sit by laying masking tape or newspaper, corresponding to the design’s widest dimensions, onto the floor. You can find the dimensions of each House of Hackney piece under the ‘Product Details’ section of the individual product pages on our website. TIP: It’s a smart move to leave a little wiggle room either side of your chair or sofa, so that it doesn’t have to be wedged into place. Ideally, you want enough of a gap to walk around the piece – or nestle a side table or lamp next to it if desired.
STEP 2: Measure your home
Next, taking into account the height (H), width (W) and depth (D) of your chosen furniture, you will need to measure your home to ensure the piece can comfortably reach the room in which it will live – so think about the doorways, hallways and stairwells it will need to pass through to get there.

Upon founding our House, we spent six months travelling the length and breadth of the UK in search of the country’s finest craftspeople. We are proud to still work closely with these small-scale, family-run businesses today – preserving specialist, age-old trades (not to mention local jobs) while delivering unparalleled quality.
Each design is a celebration of traditional craftsmanship and sublime artistry, made to stand the test of time. No wonder, then, that we call them ‘future heirlooms’

As standard, our wallpaper is made using PVC-free, FSC certified, purposely grown materials, printed with water-based, environmentally safe inks and is made especially to order, reducing waste.
From natural mycelium products and sustainable cork materials to working with paper scientists to explore creating wallpaper from non-wood fibres, we are committed to discovering new material innovations and new ways of thinking and making products.
